ChatGPT vs fitness apps: why the best setup is both

There are two ways people use AI for training right now, and both are half-broken.

Camp one uses a fitness app with "AI built in". The tracking is polished, but the AI is a stranger. It does not know that your knee complains on high-bar squats, that you play squash on Thursdays, or that you travel every other week. You end up re-explaining your life to a worse model inside a worse chat.

Camp two coaches themselves with ChatGPT or Claude. The coaching is excellent, because the AI already knows all of that context from months of conversations. But the output is a wall of text in a chat window. Tracking means copy-pasting into Notes, a spreadsheet, or a tracker that has no idea a coach exists.

The jobs are different

Coaching is judgement: reading your week, weighing fatigue against progress, deciding what to change. Frontier models are the best coaching engines most people can access, and you probably already pay for one.

Tracking is structure: what did you lift, when, how did it feel, is it going up. That wants a purpose-built interface with big tap targets, a rest timer, history, and PRs. A chat window is a terrible gym log.

So split them

Keep the coach where it is strongest, in your ChatGPT or Claude. Give it a structured place to write plans and read results. That is the whole idea behind Chalk: it deliberately has no AI of its own. You connect the assistant you already use with a private link, and from then on your coach writes blocks straight into the app and reads your logged sets back to program the next week.

  • No second AI subscription hiding in the price.
  • No re-explaining your history to an in-app bot.
  • No copy-pasting plans between windows.
  • Your data stays yours: export any time, delete any time.

Who should stick with a normal fitness app

If you do not want AI involved in your training at all, a classic tracker is great and you should use one. Chalk works fine as a plain log too, but its whole point is the connection. It earns its place when you already have a coach in your pocket and want the admin gone.

If that is you, the setup takes about three minutes and it is free: chalklog.com.
