How to use ChatGPT as your gym coach (and actually track it)

ChatGPT is a genuinely good programming coach. It remembers your goals, adapts when your week changes, and never gets bored of your questions. The problem was never the coaching. The problem is what happens after: the plan lives in a chat, your log lives in an app or a notes file, and nothing connects.

I trained like that for months. This post is the setup I wish I had on day one.

Step 1: give your coach a proper brief

One good message beats fifty vague ones. Tell ChatGPT your training age, your goals, your schedule, your equipment, and anything that hurts. Then ask for a block, not a workout. A block is 4 to 6 weeks with a clear progression, which gives the AI something to adapt rather than reinventing your training every Monday.

  • Goals: what you want in 12 weeks, in one sentence.
  • Days and time: "4 days, 60 minutes max" changes everything it writes.
  • Equipment: commercial gym, garage setup, or hotel dumbbells.
  • History and niggles: past injuries, lifts you hate, lifts you love.

Step 2: make it program like a coach, not a generator

Ask for targets, not just exercises: sets, reps, a weight or RPE, and rest times. Ask it to cap sessions at your real time budget. Ask it to structure each day into a warm-up, the main work, and optional finishers, so a rushed day still covers what matters.

Step 3: stop copy-pasting the plan

This is where most people's setup falls apart. You can re-type the plan into a tracker that knows nothing about your coach, or keep it in the chat and scroll for it mid-session. Both are bad.

The fix is to connect ChatGPT to a tracker directly. Chalk does this with a private link you paste into ChatGPT once, in about three minutes. From then on, when your coach builds a block it appears in the app: every day, every exercise, every target. You get big tap targets, a rest timer, and offline logging at the gym. No copying.

Step 4: close the loop

The real unlock is the read-back. Because ChatGPT can see your logged sets, next week's programming is based on what you actually lifted, not what it hoped you would. Finish the week, then ask something like: "Read my week in Chalk and write next week. Progress what moved well, back off what did not."

That one habit turns ChatGPT from a plan generator into an actual coach with a memory.

The whole setup in one list

  • Brief ChatGPT properly, once.
  • Ask for a 4 to 6 week block with targets and sections.
  • Connect it to Chalk so the plan syncs automatically (free, three-minute setup).
  • Log your sessions in the app, notes included.
  • Each week: ask your coach to read the log and write the next week.

Chalk is free while in early access, and it works with Claude and Gemini too. If you already coach yourself with an AI, this is the missing half.
